Alarm ringing, daylight streaming in, I sat up in my bed with a
start. Groggily I turned my alarm off and rubbed my eyes. I got
up slowly stumbling through my room finding clothes to wear, and made my
way into the bathroom. That was about the time the rest of the house woke up. I
heard Amy and Bill were in the other room fighting about something, I had long
since stopped trying to figure out what they argued about. But still as
far as foster homes go it could be worse, at least here I barley had to
talk to anyone, we had a mutual understanding, they fostered me for the extra
money, and I stayed out of there way and kept to myself using my job to get the
money I needed for me. going into the bathroom in the hall, I brushed the
tangle mess of brown that I called my hair. I looked in the mirror and didn’t
like what I saw, it wasn’t that I didn’t look okay, it was just that I looked
so, so plain, so boring. I reached into the drawer and pulled out my mascara,
the only makeup I owned, and put it on. That was better. The black made my blue
eyes stand out against my pale face. Then I shoved down a bowl of cereal
and was out the door.
School. One of the many things I hated about California, so boring and full of girls in short skirts and high heels. There were two things in this world that made school bearable, Cody and Jasper. They were my best friends, and my only ones. It always amazed me that such different people could be friends, Jasper, with his blonde hair, blue eyes and golden tan, had all the girls falling head over hills for him from the moment he entered our school, everyone had tried to be his friend, but he stuck with me and Cody. I still couldn’t wrap my head around it; We had been friends since I had met him two weeks ago when he came into my class
It was my creative Writing class. About halfway through the class a student came in and naturally all the heads in the room turned around to see a kid slip through the door a note in his hand. Giggles went throughout the room and it was impossible for I not to see why. The boy was 6 feet of tan and muscle. His eyes darted across the room until they locked with mine. His expression changed, intensified somehow like he was looking for something in me. It only lasted for a couple of seconds until the teacher caught his attention and told him to take an empty seat, the on the other side of me.
From there it had a fast friendship, I found myself smiling as I entered the class that had become my favorite, creative writing. As I made my way through the room I saw Cody already there saving my seat on the front row right beside him. I looked around for a moment and felt disappointment when I realized Jasper wasn’t there. I turned my attention back to Cody taking in his pale skin and recently dyed black hair, and his green eyes hidden beneath the frame of his glasses. And of course his skinny as a weed structure, I had seen him eat a pizza entirely by himself, but where it went I could never figure out. I bit back a laugh as i realized he was wearing his blue sweatshirt. It didnt matter how hot it was outside you could always count on Cody wearing a sweatshirt, He always claimed that he was always cold but still, He really was the exact opposite of Jasper. He greeted me with a smile as I sat down beside him. Through the buzz of conversations going on before the bell rang he said, " Jasper's a no show?"

" Looks like it." Cody nodded to himself, "
Well we havn't hung out in awhile, you want to go to the movies after you get
off work?” I debated, while I would have liked to go with Jasper as well
me and Cody was right we hadn’t hung out together in a while. Making up my mind
I said
“Sure. When do you want to meet at?”
“ Umm you’re house 9ish?” The bell rang and Mr. Brown started talking.
“ Sounds like a plan to me.” I whispered to him, the rest of the day passed slowly, I went to work after school, which was working at the pet shop. I had to close that night Finally my shift was over. I looked at the clock it was already 9 a clock and the walk was going to take about 10 minutes. I felt bad about being late but knew that Cody would understand.

I locked up and then stepped out the door a smile on my lips; it
was ripped off my face as I felt the chill in the air. And the sky was black,
it was only 9 but it was pitch black the only thing lighting the streets were
the streetlights and the light of the full moon. With a shiver I hugged my arms
to my chest. I made my way down the empty streets and couldn’t shake the
feeling that something was wrong.
I kept turning back over my shoulder and I could’ve sworn a few times that something was there. I found myself walking quicker and quicker. I had thought about getting a phone quite a few times but in the end it had always just seemed like a waste of money. Now I wished I had one. Especially because I now stood at the part where the road ended and opened up to a forest, a worn dirt path that led to my house. I hurried my way up the trail being as quiet as I could, that’s when I heard it. A howl, that sent goosebumps racing up and down my arms. It sounded like nails on a chalkboard, i turned around ang felt my jaw drop whatever this thing was it wasn't human wasn't even close to it. Its shape was humanoid tall at least 7 feet tall and thin its skin looked like a shadow, black all over. It had the shape of a face and a slit were a mouth should’ve been. I could see just two Red glowing eyes something stood up from its back, a grayish color strait and pointy. The thing reached behind its back and pulled one of the pointy things out
Well that was enough for me, dirt turning shoes sliding, I sprinted away up the trail.
*Heart pounding in my chest I ran through the woods with the wail of the beast following close behind me. My breath came in short bursts as I ran. I cried out as something sharp embedded itself in my back. I fell face first into the ground from the force of the blow. I tried to get up, but an icy coldness began to spread from where I’d been hit to the rest of my body, I couldn’t feel my legs. They were numb; my entire body remained immobile even as the thing came by me. I could see its massive black-clawed feet and I felt something wrap around my waist and then I was in the air being thrown over its shoulder. My vision began to blur in and out, I knew I should be scared but a lethargic haze entered my mind and made everything seem surreal and distant. I looked in front of me through the blur and managed to see another beast the same as the last one carrying something in its arms, to me it just seemed like a huge blob that vaguely resembled a human wearing something blue with a huge growing red spot on it. Something told me that that was important but as my eyes began to drift shut I couldn’t remember what. I wanted to sleep but something kept scratching my mind keeping it in from slumber. It began to claw its way through the haze tearing away at it until it finally broke through. My eyes snapped open and the haze was gone I looked and I knew that Cody was there lying limply in the things arms, his chest covered in blood. “ NO!” I shouted kicking at my captor, “ Cody! Cody!” I shouted, the limp body didn’t respond. The beast stopped for a moment and I desperately tried to escape only to have another quill enter my back, i felt the numbness began to return into my body, I struggled against it trying in vain to quench it. Anger, panic and utter uselessness washed through me as the numbness began to take over, through the numb and cold, I felt it. I had no idea what it was but somthing was ignited in me, it sparked something in my chest and I felt heat begin to bubble up and grow inside of me. It raced through my veins warming my cold limbs burning the coldness away. I felt another quill enter my back, and another and another but the heat took over them to and made them useless. The heat inside me spread everywhere it could go filling my whole body until there was nowhere else to full. It began to build inside me, the pressure quickly taking over me until it was painful. My vision began to flicker in and out black spots appeared in my vision as the pressure increased. I grunted from the pain and I looked at the creature holding Cody captive and with a burst of anger the heat burst. There was a flash and an ear-shattering wail that filled the night, and then I was falling. I hit my back and gasped as the wind was knocked out of me. I heard voices around me, I opened my blurry eyes to see someone leaning over me, they were saying something, but my mind couldn’t focus on the words, it was still focused on Cody. Where was he? I tried to get up but two hands held me down. I turned my head looking for any sign of him. But all I saw were flames. They were everywhere. My eyes darted around trying to find something to explain all of this. Suddenly Two cold hands touched my arms sucking any remaining heat out of me. I looked up to recognize Jasper leaning over me, I saw his lips move but the words never reached my ears. I tried to tell him that Cody was gone but couldn’t feel my lips. Everywhere was cold. So cold, I laid there limply as Jasper lifted me up in his arms, and in a world smothered in flames I drowned in the cold retreating to the only place that could offer relief for me, unconsciousness.
My eyes opened to bright light. I blinked several times trying to let them adjust. I looked around the dull grey walls of the room trying to make sense of where I was. It was a small room with a window, there was a dresser full of books. The room was clean save for a couple books spilled across the floor by the bed I was lying in. I turned over to see myself face to face with Jasper. He wassitting in a chair next to the bed, He was looking at me, with those blue eyes. My head began to spin as I tried to figure out what was going on, " What the?" I began until suddenly the memories from the previous day came crashing through my head. " Cody!" I sat up in the bed and regretted it as a wave of nausea washed over me.
" Take it easy," Jasper said, one of his arms on my shoulder pushing me back on the bed.
" Where is he? He's here right? Please tell me he's here."
" Cody?" Jasper's eyebrows came together in confusion. Suddenly he looked uneasy," Angel was Cody with you when the Reaper came?"
" Reaper? " I said confused, Jasper ran his hands through his hair, " right, there’s so much you don't know. What do you remember?"
" I was walking home that thing attacked me, it shot me with a quill, then it started taking me away, I saw another one,” I paused as Jasper suddenly went pale, he got up and started pacing the ground looking at the floor for a moment. " It had him, it had Cody." He met my eyes again a grim expression on his face, " What else happened."
My voice went quiet as I forced the words out, " He was bleeding, and I was so worried I just snapped, I felt so angry and then the anger came out and then the forest was on fire and you were there and Cody was gone. " Jasper put his face in his hands,

" This is really bad.”
“ He’s not here is he?” Jasper shook his head, which was still buried in his hands, “ We knew there was another one but we thought it came for you… We didn’t realize” I felt cold all over.
“ He’s not here is he?” Jasper shook his head, which was still buried in his hands, “ We knew there was another one but we thought it came for you… We didn’t realize” I felt cold all over.
“Whose we?” I asked. Jasper looked up from his hands looking me in
the eyes.
“ How did you know what a Reaper was? How did you know where I
was? ” Questions began bubbling off my lips. Panic began to rise in me.
Cody wasn’t here, and I didn’t even know where here was. I felt heat
begin to rise in my chest again, ignited by my panic. It came with an ache like
I was trying to move sore muscles, I gasped as the pain came through me.“
Angel?” Jasper was suddenly by my side, eyes looking for an injury, they
finally came to rest back on my face “ Is it the fire?” I looked at him through
the building pressure, “ How did you know?” instead of answering, he
suddenly brought his hand over mine. I looked down at it. They were cold as
ice, and Jasper suddenly had a blue light dimly shinning around them, I felt a
tingle go through out my body and the heat all went down to my hand and out
into Jasper.. “ How did you do that?” I whispered. Jasper stepped back putting
his hands in the air “ Look I’ll explain, just calm down okay?” Jasper eased
himself into the chair and began talking.
“ Okay this is all going to sound crazy but please just listen.” He leaned his head back gazing at the ceiling. “ Where to begin? You’re questions okay, well I am Jasper Lockheart and we are currently in Jacks house. He was there when the Reaper attacked you by the way, he’s the one who put the flames out.” He stopped for a moment his eyebrows creased together again, “ Okay for the other questions I'm going to have to tell you a story, see I’m not from here. There’s a place on earth and its called Lytheria it exists New York and in there everyone has magic. they can control a certain element, like how I made you cool down just now and how you set the Reaper and the forest on fire. “ He looked at me, I’m sure I had skepticism written on my face, I opened my mouth but he raced on, “no one knows about it because well when normal people walk through it well its like the go right through it to the other side. Like instead of going in they just get transported to the other side of the barrier.”
“ That’s not possi,” I began but Jasper cut me off,
“ Let me finish. See there’s a reason this can happen. The reason we have magic is because there are these orbs see, and there’s one from every element, Fire, Water, Earth, and air. And they’re all hidden in Lytheria and according to legend, the orbs are what allow the walls to stay up. They also allow each person in Lytheria to control a certain element. And if someone gets the orb and manages to break it then they can control the element inside completely and everyone who could control over that element in Lytheria can’t use that element anymore.” Jasper paused and spoke the next words very slowly, “ Unless you are one of the 5 guardians. They’re like the orbs. Each person can control a single element but the power over the element is much greater than what everyone elses is.”
"What’s any of this have to do with me?” I finally burst out, when I couldn’t take it anymore. Jasper looked at me in surprise,
“ Angel one of the orbs was stolen a month ago. It was the one that controls fire.”
“ And?” Jasper ran his hands through his hair yet again, “ And the guardian of the element is you. “ I stared at him dumbly trying to make sense of everything he was saying, “ Angel when the Reaper came for you, you got upset right? The fire bubbled in your chest and you set the forest on fire.” I lay down against the pillow trying to absorb that, so many questions danced in my mind but i shoved them back s I had to focus on the main problem.
“ Why did they come for me?” I said from closed eyelids,
“ Pyro, um the guy who stole the fire orb sent them,”
“ Why?”
“ What do you mean?” I sat up staring at him, “ I mean why does he want me? I get it I'm the only person who can still use fire but why would this Pyro guy care?”
“ Because to break the orb he has to fill it to the point where it would explode, he needs you to put your power in it. He can’t do anything until he has you.” I felt a cold feeling creep up my chest, “ Cody.” I said in a hoarse voice, “ He has Cody, they’re going to use him for leverage aren’t they?” Jasper nodded his head, “Jasper what will they do him?”*Suddenly flashes of scenarios flashed before my eyes with Cody and not one of them ended well Heat bloomed in chest once again and began spreading like a wildfire
“ Hey! Angel calm down!” Once again Jasper touched me and the flames were ripped away.
“ Look they won’t do anything to him, He’ll just use him to get you to come to him.”

“ Look they won’t do anything to him, He’ll just use him to get you to come to him.”
" He was already bleeding when they had him! he could be dead
by now!"
" No Angel listen. Reapers don't hurt people, they inject
them with there quills, there full of a substance that makes you immobile and
pretty much useless. They dont hurt anyone, not badly. Besides Jasper has to be
alive otherwise he wont have any leverage over you."
“ we have to go get him!” I swung my legs off the bed and stood up quickly, to quickly. My body felt sore and didn’t want to be used; I stumbled and Jasper was suddenly there trying to steady me, “ we can’t do anything right now! We don’t even know where he is!” I pulled away from him, “Well we can’t just sit here!” I shouted at him, I pushed passed him and made my way to the door Jaspers hand came down on my shoulder and turned me around, “ Look you’re still hurt you got hit with a lot of the Reapers quills, you’re still recovering. Just wait until Jack comes back he’ll know what to do he’s talking to the elders right now.”
“ Well then we should be apart of the conversation!” I said defiantly. I turned to the door when suddenly a man burst through the door. “ Speak of the devil,” Jasper mumbled, behind me as I looked at the man in front of me was older his hair obviously balding. He wore a trench coat, which was soaked through with water. He held a cup in his hand; he stood there in the door awkwardly looking from me to Jasper and then cleared his throat.
“ Well hello there its nice to meet you I’m jack. Oh and Here,” he handed me the cup which seemed to have some sort of green liquid inside. “ It’ll make you feel better.”
:” Um thanks,” I said. I sniffed the drink suspiciously it smelled alright so I took a sip and was immediately felt the ache of my muscles begin to subside, I begun to drink more of it and Jack began to talk Jasper “ We need to talk.” Jack’s eyes kept darting back forth form me “ alone.” Jasper got out of his chair and went through the door Jack following behind him. Jack paused at the door“ We’ll just be a minute,” Jack said and closed behind him. So I was just supposed to sit here while they talk? I quietly made my way the door and opened it a creek and listened,
“ How is she?"
" All things considered she's taking it okay, did the elders find Pyro?" I leaned into the door holding my breath
" No. They haven’t found any luck he didn't leave a whole lot of things behind that could be track and since the reaper died..." his voice trailed off,
" There was another one." Jasper stated in a matter o fact.
" What”
" It left before we knew it wad there, apparently it also took one of Angels friends."
"Oh no. "
" Jack, to track something it has to be close to them right? Has to have been in there presence? "
Jack was nodding to himself
" Yeah the closer the connection the easier it is to track why?"
" Because angel let loose her energy it was uncontrolled it went everywhere I mean the whole forest Went up in flames,"
" Jasper I don't see where you're going with this"
" Just listen, what if angel hot the reaper when it happened? Couldn’t it have absorbed some if her energy? And if it did”
" We could use angel to track it." Jack finished. " It wouldn’t take much, She’d just have to use her powers and concentrate The elders have to know about this, We’ll have to figure out a way for her to help us without bringing her with us.” What were they talking about?
“What?” I heard Jaspers voice rise,
“ Well come on, Pyro wants her the only way to keep him from breaking the orb is to keep her away.” There was a silence following his words.
“It makes sense. To keep her here, she’ll be safe.”
“ Okay look I have to go tell the elders, keep her here.” The words felt like a dagger to my heart. I pulled away from the door not wanting to hear anymore of the conversation.“ I had trusted Jasper; I thought he was my friend. Tears threatened to surface but I angrily shoved them back. I heard the door open behind me followed by Jaspers voice, “ Angel?” I felt my muscles lock and tighten; the now familiar heat began to rise and bubble up in my chest as I turned around to face Jasper. I glared not being able to help myself, But Jasper didn’t even look at me he was to busy grabbing random things off shelves. He opened a drawer pulling out some clothes and threw them at me. “ There’s a bathroom through the door at the end of the hall hurry and change.” I couldn’t stand another second, one minute I was watching Jasper and the next I was punching him in the jaw. Jasper stumbled back, his face lighting up in surprise as he gripped his jaw.
“ How could you do that?” I screamed at him, “ How could you agree to leave me behind” Jasper drew his hand away from his jaw
“ So you heard me and Jack talking Hugh?” His voice was calm and patient like he was talking to a child. The fire in my chest raged inside me. I raised my hand to slap him again, “ wait. Don’t hit me again. I was lucky you weren’t charged up before but if you hit me now you’ll set me on fire. I know you’re angry so please just let me explain and if you want to punch me I promise I won’t stop you.” I stood there my hand slowly falling down. I knew he was right. I could feel the power inside like a nuclear reactor ready to blow. Trying to at least cork my anger I took a deep breath. Jasper took this as his cue and began to talk very quickly, “ Yes I know what I said to Jack. And I meant it. You would be safer here. And part of me wants to keep you here were nothing can happen to you but I know you cant just sit around and twiddle your thumbs while we go and try to save your best friend.” His eyes shifted to the ground and his voice broke in the next sentence, “ I know you think it was all an act but I really did become you and Cody’s friend. And we can’t wait around for the elders to make a decision. We have to leave here before Jack comes back,” He brought his eyes back up to mine, they were full of pleading. “ I’m telling the truth I swear.” I stood there as slowly the anger began to trickle out.
“ I believe you.” Jasper let out a breath that I hadn’t realized he was holding,
Okay so can you please go change so that we can get out of here before anyone stops us?” I hurried and changed out of my dirt encrusted clothes and came in to see Jasper with two very large bags on the bed, “ That should do it,” he mumbled to himself “ Good, now for the other part, I need you to do a tracking spell.”
“How?” I suddenly felt nervous. “ Look it’s easy, just close your eyes” He waited while I complied, then he spoke his voice almost a whisper, “ Slow your breathing, and relax. Okay now I need you to think about yourself, about what makes you who you are.” I searched my mind trying to find what made me. But it was hard like trying to find to find a needle in a haystack. But I kept searching and I found something. Not quite the needle I was looking for but a piece of it I kept searching until I found all of them. “ I got it,” I muttered to Jasper, “ Good, okay now focus on what you want and why you want it”. Images of Cody flashed through my mind. Him talking about world of war craft, his smile that seemed to warm the room. I was so lost in my memories I barley heard Jasper speak, “ Now find him.” I went through all the memories each one filling me with more of Cody, “ Find him.” The voice said again, now the memories took me deeper pulling me to Cody. I felt like I was being pulled across space to him. Then it was over I came to a stop and bright golden light filled my mind and my eyes flew to see Jasper smiling at me. “ You did it.” The light still burned in my head and I blinked a few times trying to get rid of it. It took me a moment to realize that my hand was glowing, bathed in the golden light. On the back of my right palmed a glowing arrow was illuminated, pointing the way to Cody. Jasper took my hand and taking the backpacks opened the door away from the safe haven id been trapped in and to Cody.
